3 tips for eloping in Santorini, Greece

April 29, 2024

As a wedding photographer who has had the privilege of traveling from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Greece multiple times, I’ve gained invaluable insights into the intricacies of planning the perfect Santorini elopement. Exploring its hidden gems and immersing myself in the local culture has equipped me with a deep understanding of the nuances that can elevate your elopement experience from ordinary to extraordinary. From navigating the best times and locations for stunning photos to forging connections with talented local vendors who can bring your vision to life, my firsthand experiences in Greece have empowered me to curate unforgettable moments tailored to each couple’s unique love story. Here are a few tips for planning your elopement in Greece; and there’s plenty more where that came from – when you book a destination wedding or elopement with me, I offer assistance with planning and location scouting too!

1. Choose the Right Season:

Santorini experiences peak tourist seasons during the summer months, particularly from June to August, when the island can be crowded and prices are higher. Consider eloping during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) or fall (September to October) to avoid the crowds, enjoy milder weather, and take advantage of lower accommodation rates. Not only will you experience fewer tourists, but you’ll also have a better chance of securing your preferred vendors and venues.

2. Choose the Right Time and Location:

Santorini offers breathtaking views and romantic settings, but it’s essential to plan your elopement at the right time and location to avoid crowds and ensure the best lighting for your photos. Consider scheduling your ceremony during the golden hour (early morning or early evening) when the light is soft and flattering. It’s no secret that Santorini can be quite a touristy destination – so this will help with the crowds, give you guys some privacy and ensure you aren’t waiting in lines just to get the perfect photo. Also, explore lesser-known spots away from the main tourist areas for a more intimate experience and unique photos.

3. Embrace the local culture and work with Local Vendors:

  1. One of the joys of eloping in Santorini is immersing yourself in the island’s rich culture and culinary traditions. Take the time to explore local markets, sample traditional Greek cuisine, and savor the flavors of Santorini’s world-renowned wines. Incorporate elements of Greek culture into your elopement, whether it’s incorporating traditional music and dance into your celebration or exchanging symbolic wedding favors like koufeta (sugar-coated almonds). By embracing the local culture and cuisine, you’ll create a truly authentic and unforgettable experience that reflects the beauty and romance of Santorini.

To make your elopement in Santorini truly special, consider hiring some local vendors who are familiar with the area and can help bring your vision to life. For example, Santorini boasts an array of talented florists who can transform your elopement vision into a floral masterpiece. Whether you envision an elegant bouquet of local blooms or a whimsical floral arch overlooking the Aegean Sea, these artisans will work closely with you to capture the essence of romance in every petal. Do you picture yourselves cruising along the winding coastal roads in a classic convertible with the Mediterranean breeze tousling your hair as you toast to your love? With an array of vintage car rental companies on the island, you can choose the perfect ride to complement your aesthetic and add a dash of old-world charm to your wedding photos. After exchanging vows in a picturesque cliffside ceremony, why not celebrate with a toast at one of Santorini’s charming local cafes? From cozy tavernas overlooking the caldera to quaint seaside bistros, these hidden gems offer the perfect setting to raise a glass to your new chapter together.

PS: Don’t forget to secure your vendors early!
